Yearly Archives: 2016

Wednesday, January 20

We talked about Reading Guide 4 and CMC Vocabulary List 3 today. I gave students a handout on prepositional phrases (I don’t have an electronic copy, so come see me if you need one). Homework is the prepositional phrases packet and the CMC Reading Guide 5.

Also – you can come watch Marie Antoinette on Friday at 3:30 after school! I’ll still give you extra credit points! 🙂

Thursday, January 14

Today we began by discussing students’ ambition essays. I mentioned that the biggest issue that I’m seeing is theses that are convoluted and imprecise. Here are some notes to help guide you as you write your next essay: Ambition Essay Notes – 2016.

I also gave students a new prompt and rubric: Revenge Essay Prompt. We discussed the new strategy I would like for you to incorporate into this next essay, counterargument: Revenge Essay – Counterargument Handout. Students should pre-write for this essay tonight and come in tomorrow ready to write.

We also discussed participles: Participles Notes and Practice. Please be ready to answer questions about infinitives, gerunds, and participles on your vocabulary quiz on Tuesday.

Finally, students read an article called “The Complicated Psychology of Revenge” and answered multiple choice questions about it. If you were absent, please come see me next Friday to make this up.

Monday, January 11

Today students took their CMC Vocabulary 1 + appositives quiz. If you were absent, you will need to come in NEXT Friday (January 22) to make it up, as I will not be here this Friday.

I asked students to complete the infinitives notes and practice tonight (Infinitives Notes and Practice); you will not be turning it in tomorrow, but infinitives will be on next week’s quiz.

I also gave students the CMC Reading Guide 3, which is due on Wednesday: CMC Reading Guide 3

Friday, January 8

We spent all of today’s class period writing essays on ambition. If you were absent, please come see me to make it up.

As a reminder, homework for the weekend is the second Count of Monte Cristo reading guide. You also have a vocabulary quiz over List 1 and appositives on Monday. And you have the option to earn 10 points of extra credit by completing the viewing guide for the 2006 version of Marie Antoinette.

Thursday, January 7

We started today’s class with a discussion of the first part of The Count of Monte Cristo – it looks like you all were able to understand the beginning of the book!

Next, we talked about transitions and appositives: Ambition Essay – Transitions Handout    Appositives Notes and Practice

You will need to use both of these in your essay which you will write tomorrow. I gave you the rubric and the prompt today so that you can start prewriting: Ambition Essay Rubric    Ambition Essay Prompt

We will spend all of tomorrow’s class period writing that essay.

I also let you know about an extra credit opportunity – you can watch Marie Antoinette for 10 points on your CMC Vocab 1 and Appositives quiz on Monday. Here is that viewing guide: Marie Antoinette Film Viewing Guide

And I gave your the CMC Reading Guide 2 (due on Monday) so that you can go ahead and start reading, if you would like: CMC Reading Guide 2
