Today in class, we…

1. Wrote a PIE paragraph comparing an excerpt about Calypso from the Odyssey to Suzanne Vega’s song “Calypso.” Here is that assignment:

2. Read pages 1210 to 1223 (the story of the Cyclops) from the textbook. Here is an electronic copy of those pages:

3. Read the short story “Blindness.” There will be a reading quiz over this tomorrow! (You can use the story on the quiz – it will be to check your understanding.)

Today we really got started on the Odyssey. We read Books 1 and 5 from the textbook and talked about Homer’s opening and the nymph Calypso. In case you were absent or would like to review, here are the presentations that we covered in class:

Some things you definitely need to know:

  • Homer’s Invocation to the Muse
  • Homeric Epithets
  • in media res
  • Polytropic Odysseus
  • What the sons of Odysseus’ crew members did back on Ithaca after they grew up.

Homework for tonight is to listen to the podcast and answer questions! (See yesterday’s post for the electronic copy of the sheet and a link.)

Also, I told you if you had overdue library books or fines – please go see Mr. Casteel to take care of those (and bring me your sheet signed by him once you have done so).

Lots of stuff today!

1. First, I need you to bring your Malcolm Gladwell books tomorrow. We’re going to be coming up with a reading schedule (based on which book you have), and it will be helpful for you to be able to look up pages numbers.

2. The Vocabulary List 11 is up. Sentences for each word are due next Monday before you take the quiz. I’m going to ask you to demonstrate some grammar stuff with them, but we’ll discuss that more tomorrow.

3. We talked even more about PIE! Here is the PowerPoint that we did today in case you would like to review:

b. We will have a test over the Count of Monte Cristo on Monday, November 11.

c. The due date for the literary dictionaries has been pushed back to Tuesday, November 12.

Tuesday: We began our post-mortem character group assignment. This is for a major grade!

Wednesday: We continued working on the post-mortem character assignment. Students will have 20 minutes in class on Thursday to complete it.

Monday, October 28, and Tuesday, October 29

On Monday we took our vocabulary quiz – please come by and make it up if you were absent!

In period 1 today, we continued analyzing magazine advertisements for tools of rhetoric.

In periods 3, 4, 5, and 6 on Tuesday, we analyzed a documentary on tobacco advertising in the developing world. Your notes on the film are due tomorrow. If you need to print another copy out, here is the electronic document:

Period 1:

Today in class, we continued talking about The Pearl, annotating through Chapter 3.

Periods 3, 4, 6, and 7:

Students in periods 3, 4, and 6 took a reading check over chapters 1 through 10. Period 7 will take theirs on Monday.

We discussed the literary terms dictionary, due on November 11, for the Count of Monte Cristo. Here is the PowerPoint we covered explaining how to do these entries:

As a reminder, your sentences explaining how the vocabulary words (in the vocabulary section of the website, it you need another copy) are used in The Count of Monte Cristo are due on Monday.

Mini-posters are due on Tuesday.

On Wednesday, please be finished with Chapters 1 – 25 of The Count of Monte Cristo, and have the following questions answered:

Wednesday October 23, and Thursday October 24

Wednesday:

Period 1: We reviewed Aristotle’s appeals of rhetoric – ethos, pathos, and logos. Students practiced identifying the uses of these in commericals.

Periods 3, 4, 5, and 6: We discussed Chapter 6 of The Pearl.

 

Thursday:

Period 1: We continued our discussion of rhetoric in the Pearl by writing a letter from Juana asking the doctor to help her baby.

Periods 3, 4, 6, and 7:

Period 1:

Today we read the first part of Chapter 3 of The Pearl and discussed it!

Periods 3, 4, 6, and 7:

We talked about Chapter 4 of the Pearl. Homework is to read Chapter 5 (and be ready for a reading check tomorrow) and to write sentences explaining how the words from Count of Monte Cristo are used in the context of the novel (due Monday before the quiz).
