Today we discussed the rising action of Lucy’s transformation, reviewed different types of sentence structures, and continued to work on your essays about altruism. Homework is Chapter 14 (dracula-reading-guide-chapter-14).
After our discussion of the novel, we started work on an essay about altruism (for a major grade; altruism-essay-prompt; altruism-essay-rubric; revenge-essay-counterargument-handout).
In terms of the schedule, I am going to slightly amend what I told 1st and 6th period:
-Tomorrow (Wednesday) we will quickly talk about Dracula, quickly talk about our next grammar objective, and then students will have the rest of class to write.
-On Thursday, we will quickly talk about Dracula and then students will have the rest of class to write.
-The essay will be due at the beginning of class on Friday.

After our discussion of last night’s reading, we listened to a podcast (listening guide: lore-podcast; listen here) about the history of vampire legends. Students continued to work on their theses. Homework for the weekend is to read Chapter 8 (dracula-reading-guide-chapter-8).
We had a nice viewing party for Nosferatu this afternoon (and a big thanks to the parent who donated the popcorn and the water – how sweet! the students enjoyed it!)
In class, we talked about the elements of a strong thesis and students began drafting one in response to a prompt about self-sacrifice (please come get paper copies if you need them). We’ll work on that essay over the course of the next week or so, and it will count for a major grade.
