Wednesday, October 16

Hi students! I’m very happy to be back with you!

So, today in class, you are getting to retake your quiz from last week with the assistance of your notes — I will post your first and second scores simultaneously.

I need to have your Reading Guides 1-4 turned in to me by Friday. If you are missing your paper copy of any of those, here are the electronic versions:

JLC RG 1: The Joy Luck Club Reading Guide 1

JLC RG 2: The Joy Luck Club Reading Guide 2

JLC RG 3: The Joy Luck Club Reading Guide 3

JLC RG 4: The Joy Luck Club Reading Guide 4

Monday/Tuesday, October 14/15

Hi Students:

My flight back to the US today was cancelled, so I won’t be getting into Houston until late Tuesday night. You will have a substitute again on Tuesday — please continue to read The Joy Luck Club — you should be able to get Reading Guide #4 tomorrow. I’m sorry to not be able to be with you, and I’m looking forward to seeing you on Wednesday!

Thursday, October 10

Welcome back!

Today in class, students will get started reading The Joy Luck Club. I will be out this afternoon and then all of Friday and Monday to attend a conference for teachers, so over the next couple of days with the substitute, you just need to read the book in class. When you finish one reading guide, turn it in and ask for the next one. I expect you to:

  1. work quietly and independently.
  2. stay in your assigned seats.
  3. show the substitute respect (it’s a tough job!).

In return, you won’t have any homework over the next couple of days!

Also, some other news that I think will make many of you happy. On Tuesday during class, we will have an open-note retake for the quiz over nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs from this past week. If you would like to retake it, please make sure that you bring your notes packets (and if you lost them, you can print them off from this website — go back and look at the posts to download them).

Tuesday, October 8

Today in class, students continued to work on the article from yesterday! If you didn’t turn it in, please complete it and have it ready to submit at the beginning of class on Thursday.

Please also remember that you need to have a copy of The Joy Luck Club if you would like to be able to read it at home — I will not have enough to check out to everyone. We will begin reading that on Thursday.

Thursday, October 3

Today in class, we will:

  1. talk about the second part of the Penelopiad.
  2. continue discussing our notes on adjectives and adverbs.

No homework for tonight, but please remember to try to get a copy of The Joy Luck Club by next Wednesday! We will also have an extra credit movie tomorrow afternoon!

Wednesday, October 2

Today in class, we will:

  1. talk about the first part of the Penelopiad.
  2. look at some notes and exercises on adjectives and adverbs (adjectives and adverbs)
  3. assign homework for tonight — the next section from the Penelopiad (The Penelopiad – The Maids) and these questions (The Penelopiad Part 2 Reading Guide).

Annoucements/Reminders:

  1. Our next book will by The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan. The school does not have enough copies to check out to every single student, so if you want to make sure that you have one that you can read at home, I recommend getting your own copy. You can buy it on Amazon or another online bookstore, go to a local bookstore like Barnes and Noble or Half Price Books, or bring $15 to the school and I will order one for you. You will need your book by next Wednesday.
  2. Extra credit movie after school on Friday!
