On Monday, students took a quiz over the JLC List 1 words — if you missed it, you will need to make it up NEXT Friday (I will be at a conference this Friday). You also had time to get started on JLC RG 6 (The Joy Luck Club Reading Guide 6).

Today in class, we are going over JLC Vocab List 1 (your quiz on Monday will only be over those words) and doing a VR lesson on Guilin, China!
Your fifth JLC reading guide is due on Monday — here is a copy of that (The Joy Luck Club Reading Guide 5).

Hi students! I’m very happy to be back with you!
So, today in class, you are getting to retake your quiz from last week with the assistance of your notes — I will post your first and second scores simultaneously.
I need to have your Reading Guides 1-4 turned in to me by Friday. If you are missing your paper copy of any of those, here are the electronic versions:

Hi Students:
My flight back to the US today was cancelled, so I won’t be getting into Houston until late Tuesday night. You will have a substitute again on Tuesday — please continue to read The Joy Luck Club — you should be able to get Reading Guide #4 tomorrow. I’m sorry to not be able to be with you, and I’m looking forward to seeing you on Wednesday!
Thursday, October 10
Welcome back!
Today in class, students will get started reading The Joy Luck Club. I will be out this afternoon and then all of Friday and Monday to attend a conference for teachers, so over the next couple of days with the substitute, you just need to read the book in class. When you finish one reading guide, turn it in and ask for the next one. I expect you to:
- work quietly and independently.
- stay in your assigned seats.
- show the substitute respect (it’s a tough job!).
In return, you won’t have any homework over the next couple of days!
Also, some other news that I think will make many of you happy. On Tuesday during class, we will have an open-note retake for the quiz over nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs from this past week. If you would like to retake it, please make sure that you bring your notes packets (and if you lost them, you can print them off from this website — go back and look at the posts to download them).
Tuesday, October 8
Today in class, students continued to work on the article from yesterday! If you didn’t turn it in, please complete it and have it ready to submit at the beginning of class on Thursday.
Please also remember that you need to have a copy of The Joy Luck Club if you would like to be able to read it at home — I will not have enough to check out to everyone. We will begin reading that on Thursday.
Study Abroad Night

Monday, October 7
Today in class, we will:
- take our quiz over grammar.
- begin reading an edited chapter from The Rape of Nanking (here is that text — The Rape of Nanking Reading — you won’t get a paper copy). Here are those questions (Rhetorical Analysis of The Rape of Nanking) — this is due on Thursday.
Friday, October 4
Good morning!
Today in class, we are finishing our discussion of adverbs. There won’t be any vocabulary on your quiz on Monday, so please just study the grammar. And no homework!
The after school movie should be finished at around 5:45.
