Today we did some pronouns practice on NoRedInk, looked at your next JLC list on Vocab.com, and got a jump start on tonight’s reading (The Joy Luck Club Reading Guide 10).
Monthly Archives: October 2018
Monday, October 29
We are taking our grammar and vocabulary quiz in class today. For homework, please make sure to read your next JLC story (The Joy Luck Club Reading Guide 9).
Friday, October 26
Important Announcement: Today I passed out permission slips for our field trip to the Chinese Community Center on Thursday, November 8. Please try to bring those back on Monday (or if not Monday, Tuesday). Also, it would be a big help if we could have some parents help chaperone, so see if yours are interested in coming with us!
In class today, we began with a discussion of the challenges faced by the second generation of women in The Joy Luck Club. After that, we had a lesson on pronouns — please see the grammar section of the website to review those materials.
You don’t have any homework over the weekend, but your quiz on Monday will be over JLC Vocab List 2 and pronouns.
Thursday, October 25
We had a couple of different things going on in different classes today! Periods 4 and 7 interviewed some ESL students about their experiences coming to the United States, and Period 3 and 6 had a lengthy discussion about JLC and talked about vocabulary.
Homework for tonight is the eighth story (The Joy Luck Club Reading Guide 8). You won’t have any reading homework over the weekend, though!
Tuesday, October 23
We had a lot going on today! First, we passed back papers, and I gave you a letter to take home about the parent meeting for study abroad scholarships. Then we had a discussion about Waverly’s story in JLC. After that, students got their blue vocabulary books, and we talked about words 1-15 of List 2. And finally, you turned in your viewing guides for Snowflower and the Secret Fan.
Homework for tonight is the sixth story (The Joy Luck Club Reading Guide 6). You’ll have a substitute tomorrow — I expect that classes will only be around 10 minutes long because of the PSAT, so turn that in and be sure to get a copy of tomorrow’s homework.
Monday, October 22
We built up some visual context for The Joy Luck Club with a critical viewing of Snowflower and the Secret Fan, one of your summer reading books, both today and last Friday. Please do not lose your viewing guides — you’ll need to turn that in to me.
Homework for tonight is the next story in JLC (The Joy Luck Club Reading Guide 5) — please be ready to discuss that tomorrow!
Thursday, October 18
Here’s the homework for tonight — The Joy Luck Club Reading Guide 4! Please don’t forget to complete Vocab.com by Sunday at midnight.
Also, we won’t be having an after school movie on Friday — I’ve been a little under-the-weather, and I won’t be able to stay. I hope that we can resume next week, though!
Wednesday, October 17
After we talked about JLC today, we worked on a graphic organizer to help us keep all of the different characters straight in our minds. Please make sure that you bring that with you to class every day.
Homework for tonight is to read the third story and respond to the reading guide (The Joy Luck Club Reading Guide 3).
Tuesday, October 16
We had our first conversation about The Joy Luck Club today in class. With the remaining 20 minutes, I gave you some time to start reading tonight’s chapter (The Joy Luck Club Reading Guide 2).
Monday, October 15
Happy Monday! We spent most of today on your grammar and vocab quiz; with the rest of the time, students got a jump start on the homework for tonight (The Joy Luck Club Reading Guide 1), which is due tomorrow.
