Happy Monday! We have only about one more month for school!
This week, we will be doing some intensive grammar review. Today in class you took a quiz over Glass Castle Vocabulary List 3 and dependent clauses. Tonight for homework, I would like for you to watch some videos and complete some exercises on Khan Academy.
Please make sure that you log in to Khan Academy by going through the Hub (go to “Digital Resources” and click “Khan Academy”). You should not need to sign up for an account or enroll in my class if you do it this way.
The exercises that I would like for you to do should already be assigned to you, but if you can’t find them for whatever reason, here are the tasks that you need to complete today:
- Video: Phrases and Clauses (6 minutes)
- Practice: Introduction to Phrases and Clauses
- Video: Dependent and Independent Clauses (7 minutes)
- Practice: Dependent and Independent Clauses
- Practice: Phrase and Clause Replacement
- Video: Relative Clauses (5 minutes)
- Practice: Relative Clauses
- Video: Simple and Compound Sentences (4 minutes)
- Practice: Simple and Compound Sentences
- Practice: Rearranging Simple and Compound Sentences
- Video: Complex Sentences (5 minutes)
- Video: Compound-Complex Sentences (4 minutes)
- Practice: Complex and Compound-Complex Sentences
Please complete the exercises in this order.
Today in class, I need you to complete two things before the period is finished.
First, write vocabulary sentences for your Glass Castle List 3 words. 10 of your sentences must contain noun clauses; 10 must contain adjective clauses; 10 must contain adverb clauses. You should have a plethora of examples from our notes to help you. Underline your dependent clauses (and make sure to indicate what kind of dependent clauses they are) and highlight your vocabulary word. Turn this in through Turnitin.com.
Second, complete vocabulary.com for List 3.
If you finish both of those, please study silently for your quiz on Monday.
Today in class, we rounded out our discussion of dependent clauses by looking at adverb dependent clauses. We will have a quiz over all of this material on Monday, so please make sure that you study.
Today in class, we continued to practice using dependent clauses, this time with adjective clauses. If you were absent, please come get paper copies of the handouts.
Remember that Glass Castle Reading Guide 6 is due tomorrow!
We had very quick classes on Tuesday because of the SAT! Please make sure that you are finishing The Glass Castle.
After our quiz, students began working on the final Glass Castle reading guide (Glass Castle Reading Guide 6), which is due on Thursday.
On Friday, we spent a large portion of our day practicing identifying noun clauses and looking at how they function within a sentence. I asked you to write 30 vocabulary sentences — one for each word on Glass Castle List 2 — with a noun clause in each. Make sure that you highlight the word, underline the noun clause, and number the sentences, and please submit these through Turnitin.com before Monday’s quiz. Also make certain to complete Vocabulary.com for that list.
I passed out Reading Guide 5 (Glass Castle Reading Guide 5) and I told you that it was due Monday, but upon reflection, let’s make that due on Tuesday. Spread the word among your friends. 🙂
We spent all of today continuing to practice identifying and using independent and dependent clauses. If you were absent, please come get paper copies of the handouts. This material will be on your quiz on Monday.
Happy Wednesday! Today, we talked about The Glass Castle Reading Guide 3; #4 is due on Friday (Glass Castle Reading Guide 4). We also talked about independent and dependent clauses (Independent and Dependent Clauses). This material will be on your quiz on Monday, so please study up!
