Friday, December 22

Hi students –

I hope that you are enjoying the first day of your holiday break! I’m about to head out to Arizona to see my grandmother, but I wanted to let you know that I have one more assignment to enter – the CMC character chart (to which the extra credit from yesterday’s movie will be applied). I’ll enter those as soon as I get back, but you should have a pretty good sense of what your average will be at this point.

Rest up and be merry, and I’ll see you all in a little more than two weeks!

Tuesday, December 19

As we get through this last week, our priority is going to be finishing reading The Count of Monte Cristo. Tomorrow Reading Guide 9 (CMC Reading Guide 9) will be due; after our discussion, I will give you the rest of class to get a jump start on RG 10 (CMC Reading Guide 10), which will be due on Thursday.

Also – after school on Thursday, we will have a showing of the film version of The Count of Monte Cristo – it takes significant liberties with the story (Danglars is eliminated, Fernand becomes a wealthy aristocrat, and so on), but it’s still fun! If you are able to make it, I would love to see you there.

And as an extra special holiday gift to you, I have arrived at the following decision: to not count your quiz from this past Monday with the understanding that, henceforth, you will study for your quizzes. That means doing the practice quizzes in your blue book, using Vocabulary.com, reviewing your grammar notes, and so on.

The extra credit from the CMC movie on Thursday will apply to something else – I’ll take a look at the gradebook tomorrow and decide what that will be.

Thursday, December 14

Hi Students –

As I’m sure you have noticed, I have been out sick for a couple of days. Today with your substitute, you were supposed to have created character diagrams for The Count of Monte Cristo. Yesterday we went over your reading guide and gerunds (which will be on your quiz on Monday, along with all of your CMC vocabulary so far).

Please make sure that you have Reading Guide 7 (CMC Reading Guide 7) ready to go for tomorrow. I’m planning to return, but unfortunately, I don’t think I am up for the after school movie, so we will reschedule that for another Friday.

Tuesday, December 12

Hi students –

I’m feeling a bit under-the-weather from a cold, and I won’t be in tomorrow. Please behave impeccably for your substitute.

During your class period on Tuesday, the first thing I would like for you to do is to take your Vocabulary.com “quiz” over CMC List 3. You may use your blue vocabulary book but nothing else (no cell phones for this tomorrow). You must work silently and independently.

When you are finished with that, please work on your CMC Reading Guide 6, which will be due on Wednesday – I hope and expect to be back with you then, and we’ll talk about what you have read at that point.

Friday, December 8

On Thursday, your substitute gave you the CMC Reading Guide 5 (CMC Reading Guide 5), which will be due on Monday. Also on Monday – you will have a quiz over the second CMC vocabulary list and appositives (with some parts of speech review questions).

In class on Friday, we read/listened to one of Edgar Allen Poe’s most famous short stories, “The Cask of Amontillado.” If you missed it, please come in this upcoming Friday to make it up.

Wednesday, December 6

We did quite a lot in class today – we finished our Count of Monte Cristo Vocabulary List 2, learned about appositives (see the materials under the grammar tab of the website), and read an article about the psychology of revenge (please come pick up a paper copy).

Remember that CMC Reading Guide 4 is due at the END of class tomorrow – we will have a substitute, so you will be able to use the period to work on it.
